Linux Support - Red Hat Family - BackupEDGE 3.x
Older Distributions

BackupEDGE and its disaster recovery component RecoverEDGE are tested against a large number of distributions in the Red Hat Enterprise Linux family, which includes CentOS, Oracle Linux Serve, and Scientific Linux..

The table below lists operating systems NO LONGER SUPPORTED by BackupEDGE.

The final release of BackupEDGE which may be installed on any of these releases is 03.04.02 build 2. All other information here is for legacy reference only.

Patches and updates to Linux may make internal changes to the operating systems that affect BackupEDGE and RecoverEDGE. Please see the notes about Auto Updaters, Bare Metal Disaster Recovery, and Kernel Switches below.

Check this list and the notes below it frequently, and always before installing a new operating system or an update. Releases move between categories as changes are made and as BackupEDGE and RecoverEDGE are updated to support them.

There are many possible configurations for a Linux installation. Some are not supported. See Miscellaneous Linux Information below.

NOTE: Linux server distributions are generally supported for finite periods of time, generally two to five years, by the developer releasing the product. BackupEDGE support may be limited, even under Subscription, after the operating system has reached the developer's official end-of-life.

Newer Releases of Distributions Listed Above YES 3 BackupEDGE will generally run on newer releases of tested and supported platforms. RecoverEDGE may or may not work, but is not supported until we have completed a testing protocol. It is possible to update a supported platform to a release we have not yet tested and move from Support Level 1 or 2 to Support Level 3 status.
Distributions Missing Specific Features NO 5 Operating system or kernel releases missing specific features required by BackupEDGE are NOT supported. For example, releases which do not have /proc/scsi/scsi support cannot be used.

Miscellaneous Linux Information

† Red Hat 6 and Earlier Family Note

BIOS Mode Only. UEFI is not supported in 6.x or earlier releases.

RAID Types

  • RecoverEDGE currently supports true hardware RAID on most platforms.
  • MD RAID (software RAID) is supported in 03.00.05 build 3 or later under Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6 and later and CentOS 6 and later.
  • MD RAID may be configured at any level, for any number of hard drives. Spare drives are not currently supported.
  • DMRAID is not supported.

Auto Updaters

In many cases, if you run the operating system auto updater, such as yum update, you'll end up with the equivalent of an entirely new release, which may not yet be supported by your current BackupEDGE release. For instance, run yum update on Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.7 and it will essentially be upgraded to Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.10. Make sure that:

  • you match and update BackupEDGE releases to those compatible with your Linux release.
  • you re-create your RecoverEDGE media or ISO images.

In some instances attempting to re-create RecoverEDGE images may fail after an operating system upgrade. Before calling technical support, download and update / upgrade to the latest BackupEDGE release listed as having support for your updated operating system release.

Bare Metal Disaster Recover

RecoverEDGE releases prior to 03.02.00 supported BIOS mode only. See the UEFI Support Tables for UEFI support information.

Secure Boot is not currently supported. Operating systems with Support Level 1 or Support Level 2 automatically become Support Level 3 when using Secure Boot.

RecoverEDGE releases prior to 03.01.04 supported FDISK partitions only. See our GPT Support Table for a list of operating systems currently supporting GPT in RecoverEDGE.

RecoverEDGE bare metal disaster recovery currently supports the LVM2 volume manager under 2.6 and later kernels for backup and disaster recovery.

IPV6 networking is not supported; only IPV4. As long as IPV4 is configured properly, it will be used. IPV6 may also be configured but will be ignored.

Bare metal disaster recovery, i.e. RecoverEDGE, requires an intimate knowledge of the base Linux operating system involved, the vendor supporting the operating system, and the updates and changes the vendor makes. Only authorized updates from the vendor relating to kernel and storage issues can be supported. For example, if you were to install Ubuntu Linux, then download the latest and greatest kernel from www.kernel.org and install it, two things would occur. One, you are no longer really running Ubuntu Linux, and two, it is unlikely RecoverEDGE would still function. Please limit your updates to those provided by the vendor.

Kernel Switches and Updates outside of normal updaters.

BackupEDGE release are tested with standard operating system distributions and updates and normal security and application updates provided through updaters such as via yum update or dnf update. If you install a third-party kernel, or even a kernel from the OS vendor that was packaged and delivered outside the update / upgrade process, it won't have been tested and your product may no longer work with RecoverEDGE. If you choose to do this your license will be re-classified into Support Level 3.

Support Level Description
1 Fully Supported Product with Enhancements. See the table below for additional information about enhancements. Support and Maintenance Subscriptions may be renewed or extended after the initial support period.
2 Fully Supported Product. Full BackupEDGE and RecoverEDGE Support. RecoverEDGE supports standard (operating system default) boot loaders and LVM 2 in Linux 2.6 and later kernels. Support and Maintenance Subscriptions may be renewed or extended after the initial support period.
2A Fully Supported Product. Full BackupEDGE and RecoverEDGE Support. RecoverEDGE supports specific configurations, i.e. the operating system must be installed without BTRFS, LVM2, or MD in order to be compatible with RecoverEDGE. If not configured this way, product moves to Support Level 3.
3 Partially Supported Product. BackupEDGE is fully supported. RecoverEDGE is not supported, although it may function. No support calls or emails will be taken or responded to regarding RecoverEDGE for these products, only for BackupEDGE. Support and Maintenance Subscriptions may be renewed or extended after the initial support period. Installing a Support Level 1 or Support Level 2 product using UEFI mode automatically moves the product into this category.
4 Non-Supported Product - Installable. BackupEDGE may be installed / licensed / registered / activated for these platforms. Support and Maintenance Subscriptions may be renewed or extended after the initial support period for product update purposes only. However, no support of any kind will be given to these products.
5 Non-Supported Product - Not Installable. BackupEDGE may not be installed / licensed / registered / activated for these platforms. Even if activated inadvertently, no support of any kind will be given to these products. Support and Maintenance Subscriptions are not available.
