New BackupEDGE 3.0 licenses include a one year Support and Maintenance Subscription. Licenses are eligible for no-charge upgrades to all new versions whose build 1 release is first shipped prior to the expiration of the Support and Maintenance Subscription, plus all subsequent builds (bug fixes) released for those versions. This is based on the date-encoded activation code provided after either the original product registration, or the extension or renewal of a current or subsequent Support and Maintenance Subscription.
For example, the date-encoded activation code would make new 3.0 licenses eligible for…
- Free updates to all builds of the current release of BackupEDGE, i.e. 03.00.00 in effect on the date the activation code is generated, up through:
- Free upgrades to all builds of the current release of BackupEDGE, i.e. 03.00.02, 03.01.00, etc. shipping one year from the original activation code date.
- Free cross-platform upgrades up to one year from the original activation code date.
All new releases of BackupEDGE first shipped after expiration of a Support and Maintenance Subscription are not eligible for a free upgrade. A new Support and Maintenance Subscription must be purchased to extend eligibility. Purchased Subscriptions will now come with a new date-encoded activation code good for another year from the date the code is generated (not the date it is entered into EDGEMENU). Bug fix builds made available for eligible releases will be downloadable.
So, let’s say we generate a new client activation code for 03.00.00 build 3 on May 25, 2010 (with a Support and Maintenance Subscription end date of May 24, 2011) and look at a few examples…
Eligibility Examples
| Example Release | Update / Upgrade Download Eligibility |
|---|---|
| 03.00.00 build 1 released on April 5, 2010 |
Client eligible for all 03.00.00 builds, even if we release them after May 24, 2011. |
| 03.00.01 build 1 released on June 1, 2010 |
Client still eligible for upgrade to all 03.00.01 builds, even if we release them after May 24, 2011. |
| 03.00.02 build 1 released on September 11, 2010 |
Client still eligible for upgrade to all 03.00.02 builds, even if we release them after May 24, 2011. |
| 03.00.03 build 1 released on September 23, 2010 |
Client still eligible for upgrade to all 03.00.03 builds, even if we release them after May 24, 2011. |
| 03.00.04 build 1 released on January 1, 2012 |
Client can still get all 03.00.00 through 03.00.03 builds, but won’t be eligible for 03.00.04 or later builds or releases without an updated Support and Maintenance Subscription and a new activation code, as 03.00.04 build 1 was released after their first year of maintenance expired. |
If a client attempts to activate a version of BackupEDGE they are not eligible for, our activation department will inform them that it is not eligible and point them to the original reseller to purchase a new Support and Maintenance Subscription.
Note that some BackupEDGE 2.x licenses were upgraded to 3.x as a continuation of their 2.x Support and Maintenance Subscription. Expiration of the Support and Maintentance Subscription remains the same for the 3.x release as it would have for the 2.x release in these cases.
BackupEDGE 2.x updates and upgrades worked differently.See our BackupEDGE 2.x section for more information.
