FTP/FTPS backups work on a quota system with "lazy" expiration. Backups that have reached their expiration date remain on the device or medium unless and until a new backup segment would exceed the quota. Then the oldest expired archive or archives will be erased. This keeps as many older archives as possible on the device, in case a problem doesn't get detected right away and you need to refer to an older archive.
The BackupEDGE User Guide has additional information on FTP/FTPS backup.
