With BackupEDGE SS and the DVD MULTI drive, users can have full or incremental backups, instant access to archived files, and complete disaster recovery using their choice of highly reliable, low-cost DVD-RAM media, as well as DVD-RW, DVD-R, CD-RW and CD-R media. Support for a wide range of storage formats provides users with the flexibility to choose the capacity that best fits their needs. Individuals and businesses that currently use CDs for backup can migrate to higher-capacity DVD media without having to change their hardware or software. The DVD MULTI drive is also cost-effective. Users can replace both their CD and tape drives with a single storage solution to carry out backups on rewriteable DVD and CD media, and to create archives and system replication masters using write-once DVD and CD media. Easy to install and use, BackupEDGE SS detects the Panasonic DVD MULTI drive automatically -- no special device drivers are required. BackupEDGE SS also automatically detects all of the rewriteable and write-once media types supported by the multifunction drive. "DVD-RAM has lowered the cost of data protection in many SMB servers and replicated sites since we began supporting the earlier version of the Panasonic DVDBurner 18 months ago," said Tom Podnar, president of Microlite Corporation. "The DVD MULTI drive delivers on the promise of doubling the performance of earlier drives, reducing the backup window while providing new functionality at an even lower price point." BackupEDGE SS and the Panasonic DVD MULTI drive provide users with a well-integrated solution and an exceptionally low storage cost. With internal data compression, they can store up to 9GB of data on a 4.7GB single-sided rewriteable or write-once DVD disc for less than a dollar per Gigabyte. The random access capabilities of optical media combine with the BackupEDGE SS indexing system to allow access to any file on a DVD or CD archive in less than a second. "BackupEDGE SS and the DVD MULTI drive are ideal for UNIX and Linux environments where backup reliability and fast recovery are a top priority," said Dana Berzin, Product Manager for Panasonic's OEM computer drives. "The inherent reliability of DVD-RAM makes it the ideal solution for backing up mission-critical applications. With Microlite's bootable disaster recovery component embedded on each backup disc, users have everything they need to completely recover the system and their data without having to reload the operating system." BackupEDGE SS includes the RecoverEDGE disaster recovery system for Linux, UnixWare and OpenServer 5 systems. With this system, each backup created with the DVD MULTI drive can become a self-contained disaster recovery solution, enabling bare-metal recovery of crashed systems without the necessity of re-installing the operating system before restoring data files. BackupEDGE SS also features a convenient restore interface on the menu that even a novice can use to find files and recover them simply by pointing at them.
