Microlite Maximizes Value of Recordable DVD-MULTI Devices for the UNIX and Linux Platforms

ALIQUIPPA, PA -- (BUSINESS WIRE) -- February 18, 2004 -- Microlite Corporation has certified the Panasonic OEM SW-9572 DVD MULTI Drive for use as a backup and disaster recovery storage device under the UNIX and Linux platforms.

The Panasonic OEM SW-9572 DVD MULTI Drive is part of the latest family of DVD MULTI devices from Panasonic, supporting DVD-RAM, DVD-RW, DVD-R, CD-RW and CD-R media. Microlite BackupEDGE detects and supports each of these formats automatically on the Panasonic OEM drive.

"Microlite's early adoption and support demonstrates and validates the continued growth of the Recordable DVD industry and the support for DVD-RAM as a cost effective, reliable storage medium for UNIX and Linux," said Dana Berzin, Product Manager for Panasonic's OEM computer drives. "Our DVD MULTI Drives provide users from a wide array of industries with the flexibility, functionality and performance they demand from their disaster recovery storage solutions."

"DVD capacity and pricing makes it a natural for backing up SMB systems," said Tom Podnar, President of Microlite Corporation. "Cartridge-encased DVD-RAM media is well-known as the most reliable of the optical media formats for data storage, and we've re-engineered our products to make maximum use of DVD media for data protection."

BackupEDGE 2.0 has features that combine to enhance the usefulness of DVD as a reliable storage medium...

  • Compression. Improved, standards-based compression can double or in some cases even triple the net capacity of the media, extending device usefulness to larger systems.
  • Verification. Both bit-level verify and full-file checksum verification ensures that archive integrity is intact, both at backup time and months or even years later.
  • Strong Encryption (optional). Provides maximum protection for those planning strategies for HIPAA, PIPEDA or SB 1386 compliance, or just wanting to better secure their data.
  • Instant File Restore. Average access time to any file on a DVD archive is under one second.
  • Disaster Recovery. Every backup can be set to boot directly into RecoverEDGE smart disaster recovery for safe, automated restore from catastrophic system failure or other data loss, without requiring operating system re-installation.
