"New and advanced storage devices open up new opportunities.", said Tom Podnar, President of Microlite. "We work very closely with both storage vendors and operating system providers to make sure that BackupEDGE SS keeps up with storage and operating system enhancements to provide data protection capabilities that no one else can offer." Brief Features List * Archives may be created on tape, CD-R/RW, DVD-RAM, DVD-R, DVD+RW and DVD+R media. No special device driver is needed for DVD devices. They are seen as a CD-ROM by the operating systems. * Disaster Recovery (DR) media may be created on floppy, CD or DVD media. * The above two features may be combined to create bootable backups on CD and DVD media. Bootable backups may also be made on OBDR(tm) compliant tape drives. * Verified Master, Differential, and Incremental Backups may be made. * Multiple backup Domains may be designed by the user. Domains are "things to be protected" and may specify pre- and post-backup operations, lists of files to include or exclude, and more. * An advanced scheduling system provides data protection, tracking and notification for multiple jobs. * The Notification sub-system provides text, HTML, alpha-pager and numeric pager formatted messages, as well as printed summaries. Two groups of users and printers may be created: one to get all pass, failure, and warning messages, and an escalation group receiving failure and warning messages only. * An Installation Wizard detects tape drives, autochangers/loaders/libraries, CD and DVD devices. The Wizard sets up default backup schedules, sets a remote communications protocol, and more. * Fast File Restore (from tape) and Instant File Restore(tm) (from CD, DVD and file archives) provides the fastest possible restoration of files and directories. * A file selector with a bash-like interface provides easy, confirmed access to files to be restored. * Remote devices are accessed with full hardware control. Users may choose either the Remote Shell (rsh/rcmd) or the Secure Shell (ssh) as the transport layer. * All DR media contain full network stacks. Users may restore from remote devices. Additionally, administrators may telnet or modem directly into the booted DR media to perform a remote recovery from any where in the world. * DR media have OneTouch Restore(tm) for easy, automatic crash recovery. Users may also use the full configuration interface to customize the restore or for disk optimization. All of the above features work on each of the following operating systems: * Linux systems with 2.2.x or 2.4.x kernels on Intel Platforms * Caldera Open UNIX 8 * SCO OpenServer 5.0.4 through 5.0.6 (1) * UnixWare 7 release 7.1 or later (1) * AIX, AIX 5L, Solaris, HP-UX (1) (2) (1) SCSI CD and DVD writers only. Others support ATAPI or SCSI. (2) No disaster recovery component Availability BackupEDGE SS is now available worldwide from UNIX and Linux resellers and value added distributors.
