Archive Content Databases

Every single-volume backup can be indexed after creation by BackupEDGE. This database stores the filename, size, owner / group / permissions, link targets, position, etc. for each file in the backup.  If you later wish to review the contents of an archive, you will have this information available to you via our menu system, without the need to actually read the archive contents. If you find a file(s) you wish to restore, the database is used transparently to restore the file(s) as quickly as possible with our Fast File Restore / Instant File Restore technology from either of our menu or command-line interfaces.

Archive content databases are automatically compressed after a certain amount of time. Compressed databases function exactly like uncompressed databases (except a little slower), so you don't have to be concerned with the details; you just tell BackupEDGE how many days you want to wait before databases are automatically compressed (default is 2).

Of course, you can also specify a [different] length of time for database purging. Databases older than the given number of days are deleted from the system. Restores from archives without databases simply operate from "normal" speed, or you can re-index a backup at any time using our menu system.
