BackupEDGE 01.01.08 - The Basics

BackupEDGE is a complete backup solution for Unix and Linux.  Here is a list of its core features.

Easy Setup

BackupEDGE has a wizard-style installation system which greatly simplifies the task of installing and configuring it.  Your SCSI / ATAPI tape drives are autodetected, including their low-level parameters.  You are given the opportunity to select the default backup device, and even schedule unattended backups.  All of this is presented in an easy-to-navigate character-based menu system (with context-sensitive help), to make the entire process painless.

Complete Backup Solution

BackupEDGE is a dependable backup system that is both easy to use and inexpensive. It has all the features you've been looking for to safeguard your system.

Robust Backups

BackupEDGE can safely archive every file, directory, device node, and special file on your filesystems. Unlike standard UNIX tar, which ignores many important files on your hard drives , BackupEDGE protects them all!

Full Data Verification

BackupEDGE can verify every byte of data on an archive against the original, to ensure the tape is an accurate reflection of your data.

Data Compression

To fit as much data as possible onto a tape, BackupEDGE supports automatic data compression. Plus, compression can be tailored to exclude specific files, file suffixes, or files under a size limit to optimize tape space.

Of course, if your tape drive supports hardware compression, BackupEDGE can be configured to use it.  For SCSI and some ATAPI devices, BackupEDGE will even check and set the compression settings appropriately before a nightly or attended backup.

Menu Interface

Every major function of BackupEDGE can be accessed through an intuitive character-based menu system (screen shots). This includes device configuration, manual operation, and unattended cron (nightly) backup setup, and more!

Remote Tape Drive Support

If you have more networked computers than tape drives, even the computers without tape drives can be backed up across the network by BackupEDGE!

High Performance

With its advanced double buffering of I/O and variable blocking factors, BackupEDGE can get the maximum performance from your hardware!

For restores of just a few files, BackupEDGE supports Fast File Restore (given hardware support, of course).

Virtual File Support

BackupEDGE can backup and restore virtual files (also called sparse files), which are common to many database applications. When restoring a sparse file, BackupEDGE will automatically `re-virtualize' it to its original state.

Multi-Volume / Multi-Device Archives

BackupEDGE will automatically span multiple volumes if necessary while performing a backup. If you have two tape drives, BackupEDGE can be set up to fill both tapes before requiring additional media.

Wildcard Support

BackupEDGE allows extensive use of wildcarding to specify files for backup or restore. Plus, wildcards can be used to exclude files from backup or compression.

Raw Device Backups

BackupEDGE can archive an entire raw device/partition to tape. Optional shell scripts may be called to shutdown/restart any application that uses the raw partition.

Master / Incremental Backups

BackupEDGE can perform a Master Backup of your entire system, or an Incremental Backup of only those files which have been created or changed since the previous Master Backup.

Unattended Operation

With BackupEDGE you never have to worry about the routine details of system backups. Backup EDGE will automatically backup your data every night, verify the archive, mail the results to the user of your choice, and print a comprehensive summary.  If you have a TapeAlert(tm)-compliant drive, BackupEDGE will even include the TapeAlert status in its summary e-mail!
