Included with BackupEDGE
for all platforms is edge.tape, our low-level SCSI / ATAPI tape
control program. This command-line tool enables you to perform low-level queries of your SCSI / ATAPI tape drive, modify its hardware block size, compression status
, etc. Further, it provides a consistent interface across operating systems. Using this tool (and assuming your tape drive has the appropriate support, of course), you can:
- Modify the low-level block size of the device
- Modify the hardware compression status of the device
- Partition a tape
- Switch active tape partitions
- Rewind / Retention / Erase / Load / Unload a tape
- Determine tape capacity
- Read HP TapeAlert(tm) status
- Check for media present / density
- Control devices on any machine with
BackupEDGE installed
These and other hardware control features are available standard in
BackupEDGE for all platforms. BackupEDGE 01.01.08
consolidates device configurations into system-wide entities known as resources. Every operation performed through the menu system or by the unattended nightly backup program use these resources as
targets. This enables you to control the BackupEDGE software block size, hardware / software compression status, tape partition, etc., on a per-device basis. If you later change this configuration, all backup / verify /
restore operations that reference that resource will also use the new parameters; you do not need to re-configure each system that was using the tape device. |
